Okinawa Scooters, which manufactures electric vehicles, will commission a new manufacturing facility at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan next year. According to Jeetender Sharma, managing director of Okinawa Scooters, the new plant will have the capacity to produce one million vehicles a year. The existing plant in Bhiwadi can manufacture 1.8 lakh vehicles a year, if operated on two shifts.
This will be made into an R&D centre when the new plant is commissioned. The company has invested about ₹35 crore so far and plans are on to invest another ₹ 300 crore in the next two years. This will be for capacity increase, expansion of dealer network, and to strengthen research and development, he said.
“Okinawa wants to launch two or three new models of vehicles every year. This will mean development of new moulds and production lines. Hence, investment will be a continuous process,” he said. The company has 60 dealers, with focus on the northern and western States. It plans to have about 500 dealers in three years and will focus on southern States now. “Awareness on electric vehicles is high in the South,” he said. Talks are on for dealerships in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu.
“We are looking at an annual turnover of about ₹ 70 crore this year and sale of 12,000 to 14,000 vehicles. We are coming out with high-speed electric motorcycles and scooters by the end of this financial year,” he added.
